A GROUP PHOTOGRAPH - Before, Now & In-Between
A GROUP PHOTOGRAPH - Before, Now & In-Between

Pre-War Group Competition

Win a copy of my new book ‘I Shall Not Be Away Long’ by sending in the total number of years when you add together the ages of the men in this pre-war group photograph:

Information about this photo

This group photograph shows the officers of an infantry battalion at their summer camp some years before the war.

What I mean by the age of each man is the number each would answer if you asked them how old they are. So for example, the man sitting on the chair at the far left was born 37 years and 11 months before this photograph was taken but if you asked him his age he'd say 'I'm 37' and that is the age I have used for each of them. So no fractions of years are involved in the calculation.

Another thing to think about is that uniform and moustaches make some men look older than they are. The youngest man in this picture was 20.

To get a better look at their faces you can click on the photograph to open a bigger version in a new tab.

Competition entry rules

One entry per person.

No charge for entry.

The competition closes at 6.30 a.m. (British Summer Time) on 25th September 2020.

The person who is nearest to the sum of the ages of the men in this group photograph wins a signed copy of ‘I Shall Not Be Away Long’ to be posted to them as soon as the book has been printed (and if they have already ordered a copy I will give them the option of whether to get a second copy free or to get a refund for the one they have ordered).

If more than one person gets the winning number, I will pick one of them at random to be the winner. If the winner does not respond within 48 hours to my email saying they've won, I will transfer the prize to the next nearest.

Entries are made via the button below - I'm using my newsletter software to be able to easily collate the entries, so by entering you are signing up for my newsletter (and if you are already signed up, your entry just gets added next to your name).  You are of course free to unsubscribe at any time but in order to have a chance of winning you must still be subscribed when I do the final judging of the competition.

Good luck!
